Principle

The moisture content of wood affects its sound velocity. As the moisture content increases, the sound velocity decreases. By measuring the sound velocity, we can indirectly determine the moisture content of wood.

Equipment

  • Impact hammer
  • Microphone
  • Sound velocity meter

Procedure

  1. Select a clear area on the wood surface.
  2. Position the microphone against the surface, opposite the impact hammer.
  3. Use the sound velocity meter to measure the time of flight of the sound wave.
  4. Enter the measured time of flight into the sound velocity meter.

Calibration and Accuracy

The accuracy of the measurement depends on proper calibration of the sound velocity meter. The calibration process involves using a reference material with a known moisture content and adjusting the meter accordingly.

Interpretation of Results
